Organizing Your Class Incentives!

Organizing Your Class Incentives!

So we have 29 days left of school.  Is it too early to start cleaning up? LoL Well I usually clean up early because the end of year can get hectic with paperwork and filing.  I like to clean up early just to make sure I get everything done on time and dont drive myself crazy at the end of the year.

I first start with my posters.  Heres what it looked like with all the posters finally down.
I usually throw my posters in my closet and hope they stay in place for when I come back from the summer.  Since they are laminated they usually get all clumpy from being in a closet the entire hot and sweaty summer.  So I went on a hunt!  I checked out my latest obsession Really Good Stuff to see what kind of storage they had up their sleeves.

And I was right, they did!

No thats not me if your wondering.  But I love this idea of holding the posters nice and organized.

So yes, obviously I had to order it!

Okay so I couldnt help it.  This is me!

LoL

If you notice the model and I have the same *Blending Posters* in the bag!

It really is great.  Its so easy and simple.

If you think this is something you totally need, click HERE to take you there to grab.  Its only $14.99 and totally worth the money.

Moving on.

My students are hyper and I mean really HYPER.  We still have 29 days left and they are so excited for summer.  Its hard to stomp on their parade and let them know we still have work to get done.

So when I ordered the organizer for posters, I also bought these cute rewards for my little ones.  Its so cute!
These are bracelets that come with different praising quotes to let your little ones know they have done a great job.  What I love about them is that they are Scratch and Sniffs!  I usually dont go for those smelly pencils or scratch stickers because the smell is so strong. The smell on these is like heaven!  Some of them smell like cake.  Ugh it makes me hungry!
Isnt it too cute?  I love them.  I showed my little ones today and they were so excited to work for it!

I ordered 2 packs.  In a pack comes 90 loops!  Guess what!  They are on clearance for $2.99 originally $7.99.  If you want to grab these quick before they sell out, click HERE to take you to there.

I hope the looks calm my little ones down a bit.

What are you doing for rewards and incentives with your little ones this time of year?

On Your Left! Its Bike to Work Week

On Your Left! Its Bike to Work Week

Good morning.

Its officially Bike to Work Week, so if youre lucky enough to be among the roughly %.08 of Americans who A) have a bike; and 2) have a job, this is your chance to shine!

Thats right, as counterintuitive as it may seem you really can use that two-wheeled vehicle with the pedals as a means of transport, and to that end the New York Times spoke to some dumb bike blogger about it:

Eben Weiss, the author of the blog Bike Snob NYC, offered some advice for the city: Institute a Drive to Work Week.

“That way, people can see how wildly impractical it is to drive to work compared to biking.”

Smug remarks aside, he said, “Riding in the city is freedom from traffic, timetables and transit delays.”

Oh, Im so clever--but did I actually say "biking?"

Oy.  Ive become everything I once despised.

Anyway, I was pleased to see the aforementioned piece is already attracting the usual brand of insightful bike-related commentary:

Lifelong New Yorker

Bloomberg never should have started the CitiBike program without first impressing on would-be cyclists that the traffic laws apply to them too. They blow red lights, go against traffic and - on the fancy bike lanes on Queens Blvd. - completely ignore the helpful arrow on the ground and still go against traffic. Way too many of them are an ignorant and/or arrogant menace. I know this from daily experience and, I was knocked down by one while I was crossing in the crosswalk with the light in my favor.

Instead of complaining about cyclists, Lifelong New Yorker and Full-Time Imbecile should realize that he (or she, but lets just say "he") is a statistical anomaly in that he has not yet been killed by a driver on Queens Boulevard.

Meanwhile, via the aforementioned article, apparently the NYPD is observing Bike To Work Week with a "targeted initiative" to protect cyclists:

“This targeted initiative will make sure New Yorkers on bikes have clear bike lanes and safe conditions as more and more people take to the streets,” Mayor de Blasio said in a statement.

Hey, this sounds great in theory, but why do I suspect that as this directive makes its way down the chain of command it will go from "make sure New Yorkers on bikes have clear bike lanes" to "ticket cyclists for not riding in bike lanes"?

Officers from all 77 city precincts will be directed to focus on drivers who are committing traffic violations that endanger bicyclists. In addition, NYPD traffic enforcement agents will focus on parking violations most associated with bicycle accidents, like parking in a bike lane, double parking or parking in a No Standing zone.

Yep, theres that "A" word again.  Are they really "bicycle accidents" if theyre caused by drivers putting their cars where they dont belong?  After all, when I step on one of my kids Legos, I dont consider that a "dad accident."  I call it a deliberate attack on the authority and physical well-being of the paterfamilias, and youd better believe I punish them accordingly.

Speaking of bike lanes and police, heres a member of the latter driving into a San Francisco cyclist as he rides his bicycle in an extremely awkwardly-situated example of the former:

(Via Joel)

Yesterday was not a pleasant Bike To Work Day for not one but two downtown cyclists.

Hoodline reader Tim Doyle, 48, was struck by a police car at 5:45pm while riding southbound on Second at Mission—in the streets recently installed bike lane.

A video of the collision that surfaced on YouTube today shows the SFPD vehicle pull into the right-hand turn lane behind another vehicle at the Second and Mission intersection. The squad car then pulled to the left into the bike lane and struck Doyle, throwing him and the bike to the ground.

Though this being San Francisco, I suspect this may all be part of an elaborate viral marketing campaign:

The video above was published on YouTube by Nexar, which recently-launched a free iPhone dashcam app for vehicles. With the companys mission to "rid the world of car accidents" and help drivers "stay protected on the road and avoid getting into tough spots," the dashcam begins recording as soon as the driver suddenly hits the brake, or initiates the app with a tap or voice command.

Thank you Silicon Valley for your ceaseless efforts on the part of motorists everywhere.

As for that awkwardly-placed bike lane, to find worse youd have to travel all the way to Brisbane, Australia, where they just installed this:

(Via Geoff)

Seems to me the island should be buffering the bike lane and not the other way around.  Maybe installing bike lanes in mirror image is an Australian thing, like how their toilets flush backwards.  By the way, heres some background on the above bike lane via the reader who forwarded it:

A couple of years a go Danish university student Rebekka Meyer, studying at University of Queensland was riding her bike to uni on Annerley Road when she stopped at the traffic lights.  When the lights turned green she was run over by a truck, killing her.

There was a Coroners inquiry into the accident and one of the recommendations was for separate infrastructure.

Today Brisbane City Council created this in the area where the accident occurred.

Nicely done.

By the way, as you may recall from this very blog, Brisbane is the same place where residents are tormented by Freds discussing their sexual exploits:

FOUL-mouthed cyclists bragging about their bedroom exploits have sparked so many complaints from fed-up residents a councillor wants "keep quiet" signs erected along a popular cycling route.

Once again, its important to note that Freds have nonexistent sex lives and the extent of their "bedroom exploits" is the pre-ride application of chamois cream, so this is clearly a group of people with some delicate sensibilities indeed.

Anyway, as Bike to Work Week in the auto-centric Anglophonic countries devolves into the inevitable shitshow, Copenhagen would like to remind you that their city is a cycling paradise:

Well la-di-da, good for you.

Id happily emigrate there as a refugee from automotive tyranny, but apparently they dont look too kindly on asylum-seekers, so I guess Im just screwed.

Of course, thanks to Kickstarter our problems will soon be over, because someones working on a flying e-bike (though sadly theres no accompanying video):

Ill be adding safety features to the flying e-bike as well as a height meter, safety features will include something to stabilize, a backup battery that keeps it in the air if anything fails (which shouldnt be possible if everything goes according to plan). Price tag of this project is estimated on 50k as it will require a lot of technology, when the final product is available and tested properly for safety, everything will be reviewed to make this affordable for almost everyone, end price should not be more than double of a normal e-bike.

For the people that do not have any idea of what i have in mind, i am planning to make a combination of a bycicle and a drone/helicopter

I cant imagine what could possibly go wrong.

Organise Your Thoughts Win Eternal Fame and Glory

Organise Your Thoughts Win Eternal Fame and Glory

I hate outlining. I never do it.

By stating this simple fact, I am not giving you permission to cry, "Ha-ha! Kem just told us that outlining was stupid!" and gambol victoriously off into the sunset. I dont think outlining is stupid. It doesnt work for me, but it does for many others. I use different methods of organising my thoughts. Which method you choose--or invent--doesnt matter. What does matter is that you do eventually put a curb on the chaos that is the brainstorming process. Disorder leads to creativity; order leads to logical reasoning predicated on creativity.

Both the disorganised and the organised stages of prewriting are essential to essay-writing preparations. Without the former, students tend to fall back on formula, organising "ideas" that remain entirely on the surface of the issue at hand. Without the latter, students end up with scattered papers that go off on tangents and just dont hold together in the end. You may find one or both of these stages boring, but...well...boo hoo. As I have said before, essay writing is work. Shortcuts exist, but if you take them, you may end up with a shoddy product.

Perhaps the best way to demonstrate the organisation stage of prewriting is with a concrete example. Lets say an evil prof decides to torture you by giving you the following topic:

Discuss the role of friendship in J. R. R. Tolkiens The Fellowship of the Ring.

The prof is evil because this topic is extremely broad. He may as well be saying, "Discuss the role of flowers in an alpine meadow." This prof is not spoon-feeding you beautifully worded "How?" questions; he is forcing you to narrow the topic down and find something interesting about it to discuss. Many students, seeing this topic, would panic and fall back upon the accursed sandwich format. Such a student might eventually end up with a "thesis" such as: "In The Fellowship of the Ring, friendship is important" or "In The Fellowship of the Ring, J. R. R. Tolkien demonstrates the role of friendship in the relationships between Frodo and Sam, Frodo and Aragorn, and Gandalf and Saruman." Why? How? Kill the bloody split thesis! You have a thousand words to make your point; you cant get away with vagueness. Narrow. The. Topic.*

Before I start in on the example proper, I should say that in what follows, I am going to be using ideas of my own about The Fellowship of the Ring. These ideas are, in fact, mine. They are not yours. If you like them and decide to use them in your essays, you are going to cite me. If you read them and find yourself thinking, "By golly...thats exactly what I was thinking about this novel!", you are still going to cite me. Your profs may take issue with you citing a blog. I would. I dont care. If you find ideas on the Internet, in printed material, or in your own grandmothers brain, they are not yours and must be cited, lest you be accused of plagiarism and cast from the hallowed halls of academe into a fiery chasm of doom. Ill be ranting on plagiarism eventually, but for now, let me simply say:

Dont freaking plagiarise.

Right.

Lets say that this is the first page of my notes on friendship in The Fellowship of the Ring:

  • Frodo & Sam (& Merry & Pippin?)
  • Bilbo & Gandalf?
  • what about Aragorn?--acts unfriendly at 1st--Bree
  • "All that is gold does not glitter" comes from common saying--"all that glitters is not gold"--why the reversal?
  • male bonding
  • Frodo & Sam are master & servant--is this "friendship"?--does their relationship transcend class structure?
  • Merry & Pippin show friendship through betrayal--hmm--& Sam
  • Gandalf?--true friend to Bilbo--shows this by intimidating him
  • Aragorn is a bully--scares the living daylights out of Frodo & co. in Bre
  • gold doesnt glitter = friendship disguised as betrayal and intimidation?
  • SARUMAN--disguises betrayal as friendship?
  • friendship gains strength from being hidden?--humble?--gold that doesnt glitter--Saruman glitters but isnt gold
  • in Tolkiens world, the humble is actually good--his approach to friendship: demonstration of this principle

Notice that I start with questions and seemingly random examples. The questions are not necessarily answered this early in the game; it is enough for me to jot them down so that I can, if necessary, answer them later. About halfway down the page, after the comment on Merry and Pippin showing friendship through betrayal, I begin to realise that I have found an aspect of the topic that interests me, and my notes focus on that aspect. They also return briefly one of the very early questions (the one centred on "All that is gold does not glitter") and attempt to answer it. I drop some of my first "chaotic" thoughts (on male bonding and the master/servant relationship): thoughts that are interesting but do not seem to have much to do with the idea of friendship as hidden or humble. By the end of the page, I am dealing with ideas that may very well turn into a working thesis.

Im not finished. Stopping right after finding a possible thesis is a stupid thing to do. I have an idea but not really enough evidence to support it; what if a closer look at the evidence shows me that my idea doesnt hold up? Not all ideas do. Seizing on an early possible thesis and convincing yourself that it is the only possible thesis will sometimes get you into deep trouble. I have seen students cling disastrously to weak theses because they dont want to admit that there is not enough evidence to support them. No one likes having to go back to the beginning and start again from scratch, but sometimes the choice is between scrapping a weak thesis and earning a "D."

Imagine that my notes go on, getting more detailed and focussed as they do. Early questions are answered; new (related) questions are posed and examined. Eventually, several (yes, several) pages later, my thesis has taken a less tentative form, many tangents have been discarded, and some possible points and examples have emerged. The raw material of my essay is all down on the page. It needs to be organised.

This note-taking session, by the way, does not all have to take place on the same day. Ideas need time to mature and evolve. Write some notes, wait a day, read what youve written, and write some more. Think about your ideas as you are out for a walk. Bore your roommate by discussing aspects of the topic that puzzle you. Dont expect everything to come together in half an hour.

What you do at this point is up to you. I would continue taking notes, this time working forwards from the thesis instead of backwards towards it. What emerged probably wouldnt resemble my final essay all that closely, but it would echo it roughly in the manner in which the argument progressed. I would also think about the essay now and again--in the shower, while taking a walk--and in the process smooth out some of the rough bits in my argument. My thesis points would be emerging by now. I would not necessarily choose only three. In fact, I wouldnt choose the points at all; they would grow logically out of my thesis. I would end up with as many points as I needed.

You could use this method, which works for me. If it doesnt work for you, you have a couple of well-documented options:

Mind-mapping (or branching): Im not fond of mind-mapping because, as Ive said, some students use it as a substitute for brainstorming. I also have huge, sloppy writing, and I tend to reach the edge of the page a little too quickly. However, if you are a visual learner and have already brainstormed or freewritten your way to a thesis statement,** mind-mapping may help you figure out where all your ideas fit in relation to one another.

Write your thesis in the centre of the page. Do so in tiny letters. Do not bother with coloured sparkly pens. Circle the thesis.

Write your major ideas in the space around the thesis. Circle each one. Connect them to the thesis with lines. Put the damned coloured sparkly pens away.

Write sub-points (or, if you will, sub-sub-points) and examples in the space around each idea/thesis point. Circle each one. Connect them to the relevant major ideas with lines. Still no coloured sparkly pens.

Heres the clever bit:

Connect related points/sub-points/examples to one another with dotted lines or, if absolutely necessary, coloured sparkly pens.

If you dont do the thing with the dotted and/or coloured lines, I shall denounce you forever afterwards in the World of Academe. More importantly, you will be running the danger of presenting unconnected thesis points. Those dotted lines are essential because they force you to ensure that your points are connected. The act of creating these lines may even lead you to notice connections that you hadnt realised existed.

Outlining: Outlining is not a uniform process. Some people find that the following sort of thing works for them:

Thesis: [States thesis].
Point 1: A
Point 2: leads to B,
Point 3: which seems to contradict C.
Point 4: However, D clears everything up,
Point 5: and E clinches the matter.
Conclusion.

Others like to detail every sub-point and example in detail. Some virtually compose their essays in note form in the outline; when they write the essay, they simply get rid of all the little dashes and fill in the missing articles. If you are a devotee of the tiny blue format above, youll need to keep your detailed notes close at hand as you write your paper; the sparse approach is attractive, but it is also incomplete. If you prefer the obsessively anal approach, try not to get carried away. Professors do impose word limits. Make sure that you are, in fact, writing an outline for a (let us say) thousand-word paper, not a six-hundred-page critical text.

I dont care what your outline looks like. I dont care whether or not you have one. I dont care if you prepare for essay writing by stripping naked, painting yourself neon pink, and reciting your thesis points while rappelling down a cliff into a fjord in Norway.*** All I want is for you to spend some time thinking...and some time organising...and some time writing...and some time editing...and some time receiving "A"s. It isnt much, really. Indulge me.

So far, weve been speaking mostly in generalities. I tell you to "make connections" or to "go deeper," but some of you may be unclear as to what the hell Im talking about. Go deeper into what? Make connections where? Be patient. In the next entry, Im going to start on the second stage of essay composition: writing. Ill work through the essay section by section, beginning with the introduction; along the way, Ill look at what makes an argument work and what makes it fail. This exploration is going to be a long one, so dont look for all your questions to be answered immediately. Ill also eventually be going through this whole process again with different types of essays; at the moment, Im discussing "the essay" as if there is only one kind. A comparison and a cause-and-effect paper are very different beasties and have very different rules associated with them.

Next time, I shall explain in detail why "Since the dawn of man, people have been writing poetry" is such a horrible first line that if I ever see it again--and I shall--I am going to scream, mash the offending essay into formless pulp with my bare hands, and go get a job at a doughnut shop.****

*Or. I. Shall. Never. Forgive. You.
**If you havent, do. Now. Before you finish reading this document. For crying out loud.
***Though if such is the case, I do think that you may have other problems.
****No, you cannot have the last honey cruller. Its mine. Mine, I say. Preeeeccciiiooouussss...

Overzealous Is Your Middle Name Which Makes You Just Like Most Authors

Overzealous Is Your Middle Name Which Makes You Just Like Most Authors

I submitted three chapters and a synopsis to two editors I met at a very small regional SCBWI event. When I sent the 3 chaps, thinking I had a minimum of 4-6 months wait ahead of me, I was aware my MS still needed a last copyedit and a proofread. When Editor A requested the full MS, only three weeks later, complete with scribbled smiley face on her note to me, I was elated.... and horrified to find my story wasnt as ready as I thought. The second half (at least) had some serious issues which suddenly became glaringly obvious to me now that someone actually wanted to see the full. Im sure I made a complete gaffe of the situation: I sent Editor A the first half of the MS, and explained what had happened, with an assurance I was committed to fixing the issues. Editor A quickly rejected my half MS with a form letter. No real surprises there, I guess, a sharp rap on the knuckles, and a hard lesson learned.

Ah... well, I cant speak for all editors, but if I had the first half of a novel and was really excited about it, I would let the author know that Id love to see the rest when it was done.
Unless it was about vampires, zombies, or angels. Only manuscripts ready to be sent to the printer can have those in them right now. Damned angels.

At the same time, youre right, you shouldnt be submitting a novel that isnt finished, so Im glad youre taking this as a lesson.
Im wondering whats the best way to handle Editor B: just to send her a letter and withdraw my MS from consideration at this point? I dont want to waste her time. But Im not expecting that she will request the full. And I dont want to come across as Stupidity Exhibit A to someone whom I admire. How is an author, if shes silly enough to be there, expected to handle this kind of situation? Talk about arguing for ones limitations....
Let her know that you feel youve noticed a couple problem areas and want to send the manuscript to her once its really as good as you can make it. She should appreciate that. And give her an idea of how soon that might be: a month? A couple months? I dont mean to pressure you, but we like people who have a new book every year or two.

Darn mountain bikers!  Remember last year when one burned his toilet paper and charred like half of Idaho?  Well now another one has apparently set fire to California (and their Cousin Eddie-like neighbor Nevada) due to a single instance of pedal strike:

(Via @StevilKinevil)

“The cause of the Rock Creek fire that started on August 5th has been determined. Investigators have concluded that the fire was started from a bicycle pedal strike to a rock. Conclusive evidence was found in the fire origin area that was on the Lower Rock Creek mountain bike trail. A fire ignition from this type of trigger is a testament to how dry the area is right now. All residents and visitors are asked to be extremely careful with anything that may cause a fire while you are out in the forest,” the post read.

Really though?  Really?  I dunno, sounds far-fetched to me.  But who am I to argue with a confusing cheese metaphor?

Speaking on behalf of the Inyo National Forest, fire prevention technician Kirstie Butler told BikeRadar that, while the exact cause of many forest fires go unresolved, the evidence in this instance was definitive.

“All the holes in the Swiss cheese lined up perfectly,” Butler said.

Still, I cant help but wonder if shes laying it on a bit too thick, like Mario Cipollini slathering his partner with Camembert at his notorious annual "festivo de quattro formaggi" bacchanal:

According to Butler, while this may seem like an incredibly unlikely chain of events, the US Forest Service has evidence that this has happened before. She notes that sparks from chainsaws and lawn mowers are frequent causes of wildfires. To date, there have been 4,084 wildfires in California, burning a total of 150,498 acres in 2016.

Okay.  Quiz time.  Which of these does not use an internal combustion engine?

1)

2)

3)

Well at least Im assuming #1 and #2 use internal combustion engines.  I live in an apartment building in New York City, what do I know?  Maybe this stuff has gone green now and runs on electricity and kitten farts.  Anyway, Im sure if Im wrong Ill never hear the end of it from from the Lawn Care Freds:

("Hey Fred, wheres your helmet?")

And for that matter I dont know the first thing about forest fires either, so I should probably shut up about it.  However, Im a blogger, and when has ignorance regarding a certain topic ever stopped me before?

Nevertheless, the danger here is that this could serve as a pretense to ban mountain biking from the area, but fire expert and cheese enthusiast Butler assures us this is not the case:

Butler, who is a mountain biker and has frequently ridden the Lower Rock Creek Trail, doesn’t believe the incident will result in trail closures to mountain bikers, nor does she view mountain bikers as more of a fire hazard than any other trail user group.

“This is not about pointing fingers; we know it wasn’t done maliciously. We understand that mountain biking is a popular activity and we’re not trying to say that this is a reason to stop. It’s just something to be aware of,” said Butler.

Though if they could find a way to pin this all on e-MTBs and ban those Id say that would be a win-win for pretty much everybody--except maybe this guy:

Actually, if they could pin it all on that guy so much the better.

In the meantime, expect IMBA to recommend that mountain bikers in fire-prone areas ride with oven mitts over their feet.

As for me, yesterday afternoon I headed out for a ride on my Milwaukee:

Im pleased to report I set absolutely nothing on fire, and that includes the Strava leaderboard, because not only am I slow as warm Camembert, but I also dont use Strava.  Indeed, Im proud of being slow.  Plus, if I rode quickly Id miss out on the local fauna:

Shortly thereafter I came to this raging stream.  "Hey beaver, why dontcha chew me up a nice dam?," I shouted at the nearby varmint:

To which he replied with a scowl, probably because he wasnt a beaver at all, he was a groundhog:

Of course I didnt realize that at the time, and I thought he was just being lazy.  Fortunately though after a couple of hours I finally mustered up the courage to cross the stream myself:

In case youre wondering, I shouldered the bike and used a staff I whittled from a tree branch to check the depth.

For awhile after that all was going well.  I stopped at a café and spent like $47 on an iced coffee and a gluten-free cookie.  Then I headed over to the paved bike path for the return trip:

"On your left!," announced a voice from behind, and I turned as a Fred on a fancy new carbon bicycle passed me, another rider on an old metal bike glued fast to his wheel.  As they continued on their way I wondered why this intrusive and distracting announcement was even necessary.  After all, I was already all the way to the right and traveling in a straight line.  Furthermore, the bike path was both amply wide and totally empty.  So why not just pass me in silence?

No sooner had I completed this thought then there came another "On your left."  This time it was a group of five riders.  Already annoyed from the last encounter, I was now doubly so, and to make matters worse another rider in the very same group also said "On your left" to me as they passed:

This was three "On your lefts" now in about as many minutes.  Worst of all, after passing me they just kind of sat there in front of me, so my only choices were to either pass them back or stop and fire off some angry tweets about Freds who say "On your left" to put some distance between us.

I chose the latter.

Even so, I passed them two more times: once when they were stopped for a group chat, and again as they were loading their bikes onto the trunk racks of their cars.

I also passed this couch:

"On your left!," I did not say to it.  Why?  Because it was already on the right and it was behaving perfectly predictably.  You know, just like I had been when all these people said "On your left" to me.

I mean really, if you need to pass just pass.  And if you think the person ahead of you needs to know youre coming because theyre swerving or something, sure, go ahead alert them--but try to be more polite about it.  For example, why not work in an "Excuse me?"  You really shouldnt address people differently on a bike then you do on foot.  Even a simple "Passing on your left" can make a world of difference.  Do you say "On your left" to your fellow shoppers when youre pushing your shopping cart down the produce aisle at the supermarket?  Of course not.  You sweeten it up a little.  (But not too much.  "Excuse me, do you mind if I get a look at those melons?" can easily be misinterpreted in certain situations.)  Its those three monosyllabic words alone that can be so infuriating.  Im sure Martin Amis would explain that its because "On your left" is a molossus, and those three stressed syllables impart a sense of urgency and unrest.

Perhaps most vexing of all though was this sign:

Lets have a look at this turn thats so hazardous it requires dismounting your bicycle.  First you approach it like so:

Then it goes this way:

Then its completely straight for miles:

Im lucky to be alive.

Lastly, a reader by the name of Don alerted me to this video, which contains language that is NSFW (unless you work in a cursing factory):

Open source is not your enemy

Open source is not your enemy

The last weeks, Ive seen an emerge of Open Source (OS) critical blogs. Those blogs most of the times talk how OS either provides no business opportunity, low quality products, steals our jobs, are expensive, is for communists only or the participators are thiefs.

I dont get it. Why is open source so terrifying? Why is it so hard to understand that some people wants to collaborate on mutual project? Isnt it more fun to do stuff together than doing them yourself?

Communism?
Most OS projects are developed together with other people, every one has a say. To me that sounds a lot more like Democracy, and definetly not communism. Has nothing changes since the McCarthy era?

Expensive?
Sure, OSS dont have a support hot line which you can call, and it takes time to get used to ask your peers for help through mailing lists, or finding the information youself. But then, companies that charge for their commercial product can have bad support as well. How does it feel when you paid for it and dont get any help at all?

Stealing because they are incompetent?
Well, that was one of the stupidiest comments Ive read in a while. Is it a problem if someone else is using your code? Is it a problem that you are no longer the only expert of your code? There is a huge amount of projects that produce tools that I cant imagine how to code. If someone is an expert on something else, why not utilise them; instead of doing it yourself? OSS is the opposite of the "Not invented here" idea.

No business opportunities?
Im sorry, but isnt MySQL, RedHat, JBoss successful companies? Dont they make money?

Steals our jobs?
Open Source Software (OSS) is not going to make all developers unemployed. You need to see it from the other side, OSS helps us produce better quality products. We no longer need to implement a LinkedList, a String class or a web server every time a new project is started. Building on top of OSS will get us to the goal quickier. Then if I make an adjustment to an OSS, I give something back to the community. Im tired of re-inventing the wheel every day. But sure, if Im a crappy developer, then I should be worried.
