One Skein Knit a Long
One Skein Knit a Long
Ive signed up for some many -alongs and swaps that my head is spinning! One-Skein is just one of them, but I thought Id post my answers to a questionairre here as well as by email.
1. Which yarn is most like your personality (you can be specific or general with your answer- brand, type, color, fiber, whatever)?
a. Hmmm most like my personality? This is a very hard question. Im going to have to say that Id be more like a basic wool in an ash-grey. I am shy and reserved until known, and then I can be a supporting agent, or I can pop out in high contrast.
2. What is your favorite color yarn to knit/crochet with?
a. I love most any color except for Yellow. Im drawn to the orange/pinks or blue/purple/green families.
3. Have you ever used variegated, or magic, yarns?
a. Yes, and I love them! Koigu, w/ its short repeats is my favorite (almost no pooling) for non-socks, with any of the sock yarns that stripe running a close second!
4. Do you tend to favor certain fibers when choosing yarns?
a. I do a lot of gift-knitting, so I think of the recipient when choosing yarn. Babies and children get cotton or acrylic, Grown-up women get alpaca or wool.
5. Do you prefer to work with center-pull or traditionally wound balls of yarn?
a. Center pull yarn cakes! I love the ball winder and Ill have a swift soon.
6. Have you ever worked with organic yarns or are you interested in trying them?
a. Im not opposed to organic yarns, but Ive never set out to specifically use organic yarns. I think all yarns have their pros and cons in their ecological roles today.
7. How many and what projects have you made in the last year?
a. A pair of socks counts twice, right? OK, a pair of socks, a couple of spiral baby blankets, a square to contribute to another blanket, a Kiri Shawl, and a ton of fish.
8. Will you be knitting any gifts this year?
a. Yes, Mom, Mother-in-Law, Sisters-in-law, something for the kids and something for DH. DH is getting an ear-flap hat, son #1 is getting a hat from tiger sock yarn, the rest are unplanned.
9. What is your favorite one skein project?
a. My old time favorite is the garter washcloth. But I can also squeeze a small pair of socks from a single ball of yarn too!
10. How much yarn do you have in your stash and how do you store it?
a. The husband will tell you I have too much, but Id tell you not enough. I currently have enough for two sweaters and then many spare/one skeins.
11. Do you have a yarn in your stash that you love so much you can never
use it or part with it?
a. I have yarns that I loved enough to buy, but they havent told me what they want to be yet. Im not scared of using any of it, just waiting for the right pattern!
12. Do you knit less or differently in the summer?
a. I do smaller projects for increased portability, and things in cotton or linen to counteract the humidity.
13. Do you belong to any knitting groups (online or offline)?
a. Knitty (tm) Chat, Knitty (tm) Coffeeshop and a local Sit n Stitch
14. Pal, please confirm for me your mailing address (some East Coast zip codes may have lost the beginning Zero value and appear as four digits, and some pals were in the process of moving when they registered).
a. Not here, but in e-mail!

Outrageous Retcon of a Beloved Comic Characters Origin!
Outrageous Retcon of a Beloved Comic Characters Origin!
Thanks to Brad Curran for letting me know about this outrage. Now, Id like to think that I am a reasonable enough of a fellow, and I wont fly off the handle at an innocuous change to a characters origin. But this is just too much. TOO MUCH, I say. The creators involved clearly have NO respect for the characters origin. NONE, I say! Now, before you click on the "Read More," please prepare yourself for a real shock to your system.
The year was 1971.
We should all have been prepared for it, but we werent.

The cover of Amazing Spider-Man #94 mentions the re-telling of the origin, but it cannot even BEGIN to prepare us for the disrespect about to be heaped upon the Amazing Spider-Man, one of the most beloved superhero characters ever!

Right off the bat, there is a problem. The spider bite occurs the same, but LOOK at Peter Parker!
THIS is how Peter Parker is supposed to look - a normal, geeky looking guy.

Look at how they retconned Peter into looking like!

Hes practically a jock!!
Next, Amazing Spider-Man #94 introduces a fight that NEVER happened in the original version!

And the fight makes no sense! Think of Spider-Mans secret identity!!
Luckily, the new version follows the original with the jumping in the air part.
Original...

New version...

However, right after that, the original version says...

The new version?
THEY RET-CONNED CRUSER HOGAN OUT OF THE COMIC!
Can you believe it?
One of the most important figures in Spider-Man history, and he doesnt even appear in Spider-Mans origin?!?!
Next problem is Spider-Mans costume.
The original version made sense. First Spider-Man created the costume, THEN he invented the webspinners.

In the new version?
LUNACY!
Webspinners THEN costume!

WHY ARE THEY DOING SO MANY RIDICULOUS RETCONS?!?!
The next disaster is the encounter between Spider-Man and the robber.
In the original, it makes perfect sense - Spider-Man meets the robber as hes leaving after a TV special (which has been perfectly set up by his wrestling victory).

The new, disrespectful version?
It makes NO sense!

Spider-Man meets the robber as hes ENTERING the TV station! ENTERING?!?! Do they think were morons or something!?!? And without the wrestling scenes, we have no idea HOW Spider-Man even GOT a TV special!!! OUTRAGE!!
The final outrage is Spider-Mans confrontation with the robber.
Heres the logical, original version.

Now, heres the over-the-top retconned version...

I feel like plucking my eyes out and setting them on fire, with the outrage I have at the changes these HACKS made!!
TOTAL disrespect for the characters.
Who WERE these hacks?
#94...lets see the credits....
Stan Lee and John Romita?
It FIGURES.
Marvel Editors in Chief always have a way of screwing Spider-Man over.
I smell an online petition a-brewing!!

Oh Joy!! A special Ink Pad Offer with a free brush!
Oh Joy!! A special Ink Pad Offer with a free brush!
Hi there!
Thanks for popping in on Inky Tuesday.
Today is when we take a look at all things inky.
As you may know, we were at Ally Pally this weekend.
We put together a pack of the new Artistry ink colours which I particularly like, and which to my mind, are a great starting place.
It was very interesting.
Although all 48 colours were available there,
customers preferred to go with the recommended packs.

Was it because the price was better?
Was it because there was a free Clarity brush in every pack?
Or was it because they just couldnt decide ???
Here are the 9 colours I put in the set:
Mellow Green
Lime Kiss
Orange Popsicle
Cranberry Crush
Old Parchment
Cotton Candy
Midnight Blue
Aqua Fusion
Morning Dew
So let me take Midnight Blue,
Old Parchment and Aqua Fusion,
and show you how they work together.

This is such a lovely stampset!
JOY

In fact, Paul Church will be showcasing it on TV this weekend:
Sunday 25th, HOCHANDA at 5pm.
He has got 3 hours live that day: 11am / 2pm / 5pm.
Stamp the Beautiful Clarity JOY stamp onto a small piece of our Stencil Card, using Black Archival ink.

Add the birdhouse in the centre,

and the birds.

Cut out a mask.

Cover up the centre.

Using a blending mat underneath,
start working Midnight Blue into the night Sky.
I am using the little baby inkpads.
My big ink pads are on the van,
all ready to go to Leyburn Open Day this Saturday!

Blend the Aqua Fusion into the blue.
The combination is excellent -

especially when tied together with Old Parchment.

Remove mask and then decide whats next...

Mask the outside this time and add a background in the middle.
Mini Moon required....

Heres where I get mine from!!!
Spots mask
A moon for every occasion!!!

Great colours, but needs zesting up a bit....

Cover up the middle and flick a little bleach at it!
Caution: Not for the faint-hearted,
the I-craft-on-the-dining-room-table types
or the posh dressers!

Run a black Sharpie pen around the edges, to tie in the JOY

Mount on white card, and add FOREVER from a word chain.

JOY FOREVER.

Time to go baste the lamb.
Sunday roast on Tuesday.
Why not ???
Dave just came skipping into the artroom,
Ive got the peas to go with the lamb !! he chirped.
Its the little things in life, innit....
Love & hugs,
Barb

On Being a House Cat
On Being a House Cat
How long have we been over here in the house, asked Pawline?
Quite a while I think, perhaps a bit more than a half a month, said Patchtricia.
Yep! I think it is official; were house cats now, said Lamont with conviction. Furthermore, I like it! I like it quit a lot.
I do too
now, added Paw, but wasnt all the sure the first few days. It is a lot different and a lot bigger than the Shackteau. But there have always been lots of places to hide.
I had misgivings about being over here as well, meowed Patch. We were quite accustomed to the Shackteau and now it seems almost a fading memory.
In the Schackteau Meugh (e.d. Catonese for Hugh in case youve forgotten) was with us quit a bit of the day, said Lamont, But now the human servants are around us 24/7. In the Shackteau Mewreen (e.d. Cantonese for Doreen) wasnt a round much. Generally shed just come out in the evening to feeding and pet us. But how shes around all the time. Meugh still takes care of our litter boxes, but she is much more involved with us. And, she has a great lap. I even jump up on it voluntarily now.
There used to be a pizza here :)
I wonder if we will ever find all the places to explore, said Paw. There are many many many places to find and stuff to play with besides our toys.
This whole place is rather like a toy, continued Patch. I love hiding in their clothes and tossing them on the ground. I could do that by the hour.
And we can dash lickety split from one place to the other and slide on the many rugs to our hearts content, purred Lamont. And you can plop yourself down almost anywhere a human servant is present and get tummy rubs. Oh, oh, oh, how we like those tummy rubs! Both Patch and Paw nodded their assent.
I like waking them up at night by jumping on them when their in bed and asleep, add Lamont. You get all types of reactions. I also like to snuggle up to Meugh when he sticks his naked leg out from under the covers. And I love viewed them from the vantage point of the headboard as they purr, or rather snore. I still get a kick out of jumping down of Mewreens head when I get off the headboard.
I counted the other day and we have five beds, said Patch. Three upstairs and 2 downstairs. Official beds that is, we can make anyplace a bed when we feel like it.
I rather like sitting on the dresser in our dining/patio patio room. I think they sometimes think I am an artistic piece of furniture.
I like my death defying catwalks on the rail above the steps, said Lamont. It scare Mewreen to death.
Yep, we are officially house cats, said Paw.
Amen to that, replied Patch and Lamont in two part harmony.
We think there is a small elephant hiding here
