Outfit Coffee time

Outfit Coffee time

Good morning guys! Today I show you the look that I wore to go out with my friends. Before arriving, we take for coffee
in Starbucks and take these pictures. It was the day after my birthday, I premiered my new gray sweatshirt with velvet message and a black handbag. Hope you like the look and happy weekend everyone!

One day at a time One thing at a time

One day at a time One thing at a time

Hi there!
Thanks for popping in.
Beautiful sunny day here in the south of England.
The leafy lanes of Kent and Sussex are a wondrous thing
at this time of year.
Mind you!
That pretty much goes for the whole of Britain
when the sun’s out!

Wednesday’s blog, so it’s time to reflect on what’s what,
and get mindful.

Just coming down from a marathon TV weekend.
Seven hours of live TV is no mean feat, I can tell you!
Takes a week to recover!
But once again, it shows me that my way of tackling things one at a time works !
Last week I was dealing with the art prep for the shows,
so I tackled it ONE HOUR AT A TIME.
Which is exactly how I approached the live shows -
ONE AT A TIME.

It’s how I do my housework -
ONE ROOM AT A TIME.

And how I cope with my finances -
ONE BILL AT A TIME.

I can only speak for myself, and you may have it totally sussed,
but when I look ahead at the future,
whether it be the whole weekend of shows,
the next two months of exhibitions,
or the 2017 new year of Clarity and Groovi,
it can get really overwhelming and frightening.

I am prone to anxiety, you see.
Years ago, before I figured out my
ONE DAY ONE THING AT A TIME kinda Life strategy,
I used to get the most terrible chest pains.
It would feel as though somebody had put a metal strap around my chest and was tightening it with a ratchet.
I lived like that for years.
When the chest pains reached a certain pitch,
the panic breathing would kick in, and I would
start snatching for breath and hyperventilating.
If I couldn’t calm my mind down and slow my breathing down,
a full blown panic attack would ensue.
Bloody terrible. And not just for me.
It must have been awful to watch.

So yeah.
I get it. Been there. Not going back if I can help it.

So I look at what needs to be done, and then
screw whatever it is right down to the smallest,
most manageable increment I can handle.
ONE AT A TIME.
Move to the next one, whatever it is.
TICK.
Move to the next one.
TICK.

This is my way of not projecting and fretting
about what’s on my plate.
Let’s face it - I can only eat ONE meal at a time,
so why worry about what’s on the menu all month !!

I used to panic a lot about money and bills too,
which is possibly why I am a workaholic!
I always tried to work my way out of the problem;
still do!!
I still get occasional waves of insecurity around money,
but that’s a human trait I think, and nothing abnormal,
unless you’re minted but think you still need more!

Let’s look at the ONE THING AT A TIME idea from another perspective....

I have wanted to write a book for many years.
But a whole book ???
When’s that going to happen, apart from never ?!

(I love this photo! If you can think of a good caption,
write it below...... )

So what I need to do, and I know it, is tackle a chapter at a time,
or even a page or a paragraph at a time.

My goodness! I have written artbooks galore in the form of a daily blog for the past 3 years!

Do you get what I mean?
Sometimes we look at a project or a dream in its entirety,
and are very quick to surrender to the enormity of the task.

But if we were to break it down into manageable, bitesize pieces, wouldn’t it all become far more feasible?
And the amazing thing that I have found is that when you do that, and you tackle the smaller parts
ONE AT A TIME,
then the larger task which seemed unachievable happens,
despite our fears of inadequacy.

That’ll do for now.
I have a little list of things which need ticking, one at a time,
LIKE PACK !!!!
Before Paul and I go off on our jolly to New York for a few days.
Can’t wait !
Dave is holding the fort while Paul and I go have fun.
I get to see Grace too!

I shall certainly be a-bloggin from the BIG APPLE though -
One day at a time.

Love & hugs.
Barb

On The Hurry Of This Time Henry Austin Dobson

On The Hurry Of This Time Henry Austin Dobson

(Poem #1900) On The Hurry Of This Time
With slower pen men used to write,
 Of old, when "letters" were "polite";
In Anna's or in George's days,
They could afford to turn a phrase,
Or trim a struggling theme aright.

They knew not steam; electric light
Not yet had dazed their calmer sight; -
They meted out both blame and praise
 With slower pen.

Too swiftly now the Hours take flight!
What's read at morn is dead at night:
Scant space have we for Art's delays,
Whose breathless thought so briefly stays,
We may not work - ah! would we might! -
 With slower pen.
-- Henry Austin Dobson
I remember, back in the nineties when email was just beginning to be
widespread, the flood of articles lamenting the inevitable demise of the
handwritten letter, and the creeping soullessness of the casually dashed-off
email that was replacing it. Come the next decade, and that has been
succeeded by laments for the inevitable demise of the printed book, and its
replacement by soulless e-books, expedient audiobooks and mindless
television. It's rather amusing, then, to read today's poem, and realise
that the hastier time Dobson was writing about was 1882. Plus ça change,
plus c'est la même chose.

One day at a time

One day at a time

Im continuing to follow some sort of training plan albeight just one day at a time. Its to the point right now where I am not thinking about training at all. Ive entered about 3 months worth of workouts onto my Yahoo Calender. Every morning Ill get up and have my cup of coffee first w/o eating breakfast. Ill check my email first thing and there will be a reminder from the Calendar service with the workout.

If it is an interval ride Ill go right down to the basement w/o eating first. If it is an off day or easy day I might go out for 1/2hr on the road bike or commute or do nothing at all.

Right now the MSP intervals have increased to about 12 minutes. In addition there have been some workouts with shorter intervals but also with decreased rest. Earlier in the year everything was 1:1 work:rest. Some of the workouts have been 1on :45 off or 3on 1off. Those 1xs didnt go so well. The 3 min intervals went decently. The cool thing is that my 12 min intervals are only 10 W less than the 3 min intervals.

For the longer intervals it is much more about mental toughness than about fitness. It takes concentration to keep the mind wandering and the power output consistent. Ive found my cadence slowly start to decrease through the interval, and then the electronic brake starts to overcome my pedaling. I have to wake up get on it a little to maintain the steady state.

Ive done one MSP workout outside on a long hill. It felt real good. There is no electronic brake just gravity so if you start to fade a little you wont stop dead, just slow down a tad.

The weather is starting to improve and its time to get outside more. My primary motivation for the moment is to just have fun. Training for now is sort of an insurance policy that supports the having fun aspect. Its enough to keep me fit but not so much that it is becoming a job. Ill admit the past few years it was more task/goal oriented because that was the goal Id set. Those goals may come back to the fore front shortly or may not.

The constant though is just the cycling itself and the fun, freedom, social, and empowerment aspects that it provides. It can be slightly expensive to get tooled up but cycling has got to be one of the best bang/buck activities there is. Running is probably the best but I dont do running.

One thing Ive been thinking of is all the incredible riding around me that I havent been doing. Places like
Fort Lewis
Carvins Cove
Mountain Lake
Mt. Rodgers/Iron Mountain
Sherando
Arcadia
Harrisonburg
Douthat
Potts Mountain

All these places are within 2hrs of here but I have rarely been out to any except for a race in the past years.

Once Upon a Time a Chipmunk and a Penguin Went to a Motel Room

Once Upon a Time a Chipmunk and a Penguin Went to a Motel Room

Im finishing an illustration-only book. It was intended for children, but its suitable for all ages.
Please refer to this post.
So would it be considered a childrens picture book because it meets the page-count criteria, or could it be stretched to the novelty category and submitted to agents that dont accept childrens fiction? It seems to me that novelty can be a tough sell, but arent consumers more likely to purchase a novelty/gift book than, say, a fifteen-dollar picture book? I ask that realizing your answer most likely is that it depends on the pictures, but feel free to surprise me here.
It depends on the pictures---and the topic.

There is a core audience for your book.  Im guessing, from your question, that the topic or treatment is somewhat adult, and the only reason you think it might be a childrens book is the format.  I dont suppose youve seen Baby, Mix Me a Drink?  Or Furverts?  Those are both board book formats, a format associated with infants and toddlers.  Does the format make them for that audience?  OH HELL NO.

Of course, there are some picture books published every year by childrens imprints for which the audience is really adults.  The ones who skate that line in an acceptable way are usually light-hearted life advice, like: "if you love someone, set them free."  They are bought as graduation gifts (see Walk On or Oh The Places Youll Go).  The ones that dont are usually dreadful and sometimes psychotic life advice, like: "if you love someone, let them chop you down to a stump."

But graduation gifts is a difficult niche to publish into---more difficult than adult novelty books.

Figure out who your audience is.  Good luck!

Once upon a time there was a Duke and his Duchess

Once upon a time there was a Duke and his Duchess

Hi there,
Thanks for popping in.

Friday’s blog a private peek, right?

Well, let me tell you a story.
Once upon a time we had two beautiful black labs,
called Dutchie and Duke.

They were the most beautiful dogs,
and they loved each other very much.

In fact, when they were young lovers,
they had a litter of 8 beautiful puppies too.
5 black labs and 3 yellow!
You can imagine our surprise when the little blondies slipped out!
Dutchie was an amazing Mum,
and all 8 were fine pedigree labrador specimens!

As you will appreciate, we couldn’t keep all the babies,
but they went to good homes, each and every one.

In those days, I used to make slate vases to make ends meet,
and used to exhibit the slates at Art & Craft shows
around the country. I made some very good friends in that arty world. Real artisans, wood turners, sculptors, painters, jewellers -
a very different blend to this craft world.

One of those friends was a jeweller called Gill.
We met at the Penshurst Show that May, and she sadly
told me that she had just said goodbye to one of her three cherished yellow labs. You have to know that her dogs were her world, her best friends. Where you saw Gill, you saw her 3 pals.
“Well, Gill, would you consider a puppy?” I asked.
“Dutchy and Duke have recently had a litter.”
Immediately her face lit up,
but then she remembered mine were black.
“But Barbara, I prefer yellow labs. Girls”
So I explained about the surprise arrivals,
that there was still one yellow girl left at home,
and she could hardly wait to come and meet her.

You may or may not know that pedigree dogs fetch a tidy sum.
You may or may not know that most of us artists who slept in the van and ate round the camp fire at those shows lived from hand to mouth and certainly had no spare cash for pedigree dogs!
It went without saying that I was more interested in
finding a perfect home for the little yellow lab,
and although the money would have come in handy for us,
Gill was happy to pay for all the jabs etc and I was delighted
to introduce them to each other. Job done.

In the September we met at Penshurst again.
Junior was doing well, and so was Gill.

But she gave me something very, very precious as a thank you.
Six silver napkin rings.

With all the hallmarks too.

They are my pride and joy.
They only come out on special occasions, like Christmas.
So I nearly went spare the other evening looking for them.
I had put them in such a safe place!

And when I was frantically hunting for them,
it wasn’t the napkin rings I was really desperate for -
it was the memory. The puppies.
Dutchie and Duke.
Gill. Her joy.

And when I finally found them,
tucked away at the back of the dresser,
I was so relieved I cried.

Not about the silver though.
No no!  What they represent.

Look! They have even had some little puppies.

Time to go decorate the tree.
My two pups are arriving Sunday.

Love & Hugs,
Barb
