Obama says goodbye in last presidential speech
Obama says goodbye in last presidential speech

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 : (AFP) - Barack Obama closes the book on his presidency Tuesday, with a farewell speech in Chicago that will try to lift supporters felled by Donald Trumps shock victory.
Obamas last trip on Air Force One will be a pilgrimage to his adoptive hometown, where he will address a sell-out crowd not far from where he accepted the presidency eight years ago. Diehard fans -- many African Americans -- have braved Chicagos frigid winter to collect free tickets, which now sell for upwards of $1,000 a piece on Craigslist. The First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden will come along on for the ride. Obamas cross-country trek would be a sentimental trip down memory lane, were it not slap-bang in the middle of a
tumultuous presidential handover. Trump has smashed conventions, vowed to efface Obamas legacy and hurled personal insults left and right.
The 2016 election campaign has raised serious questions about the resilience of US democracy. In a virtually unprecedented move, US intelligence has accused the Kremlin of tipping the electoral scales in Trumps favor. Democrats, cast into the political wilderness with the loss of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives plus a majority of statehouses, are struggling to regroup.
With an approval rating hovering around 55 percent, Obama will hope to steel them for new battles ahead. Lead speechwriter Cody Keenan said the address will be about Obamas vision for where the country should still go. "Its not going to be like an anti-Trump speech, its not going to be a red meat, rabble rousing thing, it will be statesman-like but it will also be true to him," Keenan told AFP. "It will tell a story."
- Life after White House -
Trumps unorthodox politics has thrown 55-year-old Obamas transition and post-presidency plans into flux.
Obama, having vowed a smooth handover of power, finds himself being increasingly critical of Trump as he prepares to leave office on January 20. After that there will still be a holiday and an autobiography, but Obama could find himself being dragged backed into the political fray if Trump were to enact a Muslim registry or deport adults brought to the United States years ago by their parents. Having vowed to take a backseat in politics, Obamas second act could yet be as politically engaged as Jimmy Carter -- whose post-presidency has remade his image as an elder statesman.
Many Obama aides who had planned to take exotic holidays or launch coffer-replenishing forays into the private sector are also reassessing their future and mulling a return to the political trenches.
Obamas foundation is already gearing up for a quasi-political role -- funneling idealistic youngsters into public life.
- Presidential precedent -
Presidents since George Washington have delivered a farewell address of sorts.Washingtons final 7,641-word message -- which is still read once a year in the Senate by tradition -- contained warnings about factionalism and interference by foreign powers that seem oddly prescient.
But speechwriter Keenan sees few obvious templates: "Bush and Clinton did theirs from here (the White House), George H.W. Bush went to West Point, gave a foreign policy speech," he told AFP. "They are all totally different." The trip to Chicago is not just for nostalgia, Keenan indicated.
"The thread that has run though his career from his days as community organizer to the Oval Office is the idea that if you get ordinary people together and get them educated, get them empowered, get them to act on something, thats when good things happen," he said. "For him, as someone who started as a community organizer, whose campaign was powered by young people, ordinary people, we decided we wanted to go back to Chicago.""Chicago is not just his hometown, its where his career started." And now it is also where Obamas presidential career will effectively end.

Obama Yudof and the Future of Higher Ed
Obama Yudof and the Future of Higher Ed
At the University of Michigan, President Obama made an important speech about his new push to control tuition increases and student debt at American universities. In Ann Arbor, he told college and university leaders that, You cant assume that youll just jack up tuition every single year. If you cant stop tuition from going up, then the funding you get from taxpayers each year will go down. We should push colleges to do better. We should hold them accountable if they dont. The policy behind this statement can be found in his new Race to the Top initiative for higher education. Basically, the president wants to use federal grants and loans as a way of pressuring public universities and colleges to contain tuition increases, and while he does realize that state budge cuts have played a role in tuition increases, it is clear that he thinks that there are other reasons for the escalating costs. Moreover, the president wants to use a billion-dollar grant system to provide funding to states that help to control tuition increases.
In order to discuss this new initiative, PBS had President Yudof on the News Hour. The first question asked was the following: At basic level, do you agree with the presidents observation that the fast-rising cost of getting a college education is harming access? Yudofs response was, You have to remember the president didnt mention that theres been systematic disinvestment in higher education. Our budget was cut $750 million in a year, about 25 percent . . . A third of our tuition goes back into financial aid and is distributed to low-income students -- 55 percent of our students pay no tuition -- 39 percent of the students are Pell-eligible, relatively low-income families. Thats the reality. In other words, Yudof blamed the move to a high fee, high aid model solely on state budget cuts.
While it is obvious that the state budge cuts have a direct effect on tuition increases, we have also seen tuition increases when the state contribution to the UC system has gone up. Furthermore, the other guest on the show, Richard Vedder, pointed out that there has been a massive increase in federal money going to universities and colleges, and that the increase in federally funded grants and loans has allowed universities to continue to spend more as they reduce their reliance on state support.
When President Yudof was asked about the rising costs of higher ed, he responded in the following manner, Our costs are actually down 15 percent per credit hour over the last 10 years. Thats the reality. The states dont want to pay. So its like you go to your drugstore, the insurance company doesnt want to pay, your co-pay goes from $10 to $20. That doesnt mean the cost of the drug has doubled. It just means your costs have doubled. This response is very revealing because Yudof is openly admitting that as tuition increases, the university is actually spending less money on educating students.
So not only are students paying more and getting less, but as Richard Vedder argued, universities are increasing their spending on non-educational expenses, like administration: But it is also clear that universities in the United States over the last generation or so have enormously increased their staffs, for example, administrative personnel, student service personnel. There are climbing walls. Theyre not in and of themselves all that important, but the cumulative effects of a lot of spending on things outside of the core missions has contributed somewhat to the inflation in college costs. In support of Vedders claims, my own research shows that universities now spend on average about 10% of their total budgets on undergraduate education, but undergraduates and states support 35% of the total university budgets. Meanwhile, the costs for professional education, administration, and research continues to increase, and so as undergraduates pay more, they end up subsidizing other parts of their universities to a greater extent.
When asked what would happen if the federal government decreased its support for the University of California, Yudof replied that, classes will get bigger, class access may suffer, time to degree may grow. I agree with Professor Vedder. We have to do a better job of cutting our budgets. If we have too many administrators, lets reduce the number. While we have seen some reduction of administrators at the Office of the President, we are still waiting to see what the campuses will do about administrative bloat. Furthermore, class sizes have already gotten bigger and the access to require classes has already decreased, so it is hard to see how the university is going to maintain educational quality as it increases tuition and aid.
What we should push for is clearer budget transparency so we can see how universities are actually spending the money they do have. We also have to insist on a renewed commitment to undergraduate education, and a major emphasis on making sure that federal research grants receive enough overhead funding (indirect costs) to make them at least break even. As a way of pushing this agenda, I have been invited to the White House to make a presentation to the administration.

Obama and the “Grand Bargain”
Obama and the “Grand Bargain”
What are we to make of Obamas grand bargain? My initial reaction to the news that Obama was putting Social Security and Medicare cuts on the table was despair. What was/is the White House thinking? Obviously, no one outside the White House knows for sure, but I think I have a pretty good idea.
As I said in a DM exchange with Mike Konczal on Wednesday night, I think the White House is trying to scare Democrats into accepting a deficit reduction deal with little or no revenue increases. I think Boehner cant get the votes in the House for a deal that includes any revenue increases, and I think the White House knows it. They know that the final deal will end up being 100% spending cuts. The problem with this is that it might not get enough Dem votes to pass especially if Dems on the Hill are obsessing about the ratio of spending cuts to revenue increases throughout the negotiations.
So in order to retain enough Dems, the White House needs to make sure that the $2 trillion, all-spending-cuts deal is the compromise position. If the alternative is an even larger deficit reduction deal that includes savage cuts to Social Security and Medicare, then plenty of Dems will be downright eager to vote for a deficit reduction deal that doesnt touch Social Security or Medicare, even if it is 100% spending cuts. If you know that the final deal will be 100% spending cuts, then you dont want the Dems to make their line in the sand the inclusion of revenue increases. By putting Social Security and Medicare on the table, you allow the Dems to make the protection of those programs their line in the sand, rather than the inclusion of revenue increases. And that will free enough Dems up to vote for the final, all-spending-cuts deal.
This would also explain why Obama is still saying that he wants a grand bargain, even after Boehner said that they should focus on the smaller deal that the Biden-led group had been working on for the strategy to be effective, the grand bargain needs to continue to be a viable option (that the Dems are afraid of).
Now, we can argue about whether Obama truly wants to strike a grand bargain that cuts Social Security and Medicare. I dont know if he does, and neither do you. (Its certainly possible that he does, but again, I dont know.) However, I think that question, interesting though it may be, is ultimately irrelevant. Even if Obama truly does want a grand bargain, theres simply no way that he thinks they can agree on $1 trillion in tax increases, and an overhaul of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, all in under 2 weeks. Purely as a legislative matter, its almost an impossible task, which Im sure Phil Schiliro would have explained to him. So really, the only way the grand bargain makes sense is if its a negotiating strategy.
And if this is a negotiating strategy, the best explanation is that the White House is using the threat of Social Security and Medicare cuts to scare Democrats into voting for an all-spending-cuts deal.

Obama vs McCain Faith off!
Obama vs McCain Faith off!
Heres a recent video from John McCain about Christianities role in the USA whilst campaigning to Beliefnet.com.
Which is of course massively factually inaccurate, not least because most of the founding fathers were deists and "In God We Trust" not being the motto of the USA till the 50s.
And heres Barak Obama giving a speech in 2006:
I dislike heavily edited things so here is the full 40min talk by Obama (I couldnt find a longer clip of McCain).
I think everyone who makes their way to this site (regardless of their faith) are going to be a lot more impressed with the latter talk - hell after the last 8 years its almost astonishing. It will be interesting to see if Obama sticks to his guns on the topic, the fact that talk was given in a church is a good sign after all. Heres hoping.
Despite our special relationship I find it reassuring that whilst Presidential candidates in America talk like McCain here in the UK Tony Blair was worried that people might think him a "A Nutter" .
Overall I think that is a far healthier position to be in.

Obaman?n dünyadaki deste?i
Asl?na bak?l?rsa, dünya genelinde de Obamaya destek halen oldukça yüksek boyutlarda. Pew Ara?t?rma Merkezinin yapt??? çal??maya göre; dünya genelinde ara?t?rma yap?lan 40 ülkede, halk?n yüzde 65i Obama hakk?nda olumlu görü?lere sahipken, yaln?zca yüzde 27si Amerikan Ba?kan?na güvenmedi?ini belirtiyor.[4] Obamaya en çok destek veren ülke halklar?; Filipinler (yüzde 94), Güney Kore (yüzde 88), Fransa (yüzde 83), Gana (yüzde 82), Avustralya (yüzde 81), Kenya (yüzde 80), Tanzanya (yüzde 78), ?talya (yüzde 77), Güney Afrika (yüzde 77), Senegal (yüzde 77), Birle?ik Krall?k (yüzde 76), Kanada (yüzde 76), Hindistan (yüzde 74) ve Vietnam (yüzde 71) olarak s?ralan?yor. Obamaya en dü?ük destek veren ülkelerse; Rusya (yüzde 11), Pakistan (yüzde 14), Ürdün (yüzde 14), Filistin (yüzde 15), Venezuela (yüzde 26), Lübnan (yüzde 36) ve Arjantin (yüzde 40) olarak s?ralan?yor. Obaman?n, Irak Sava?? nedeniyle 2000lerin ba??nda anti-Amerikanc?l???n tavan yapt???

Ayr?ca Obaman?n hiçbir önemli dünya sorununa (Filistin-?srail Sorunu, Ke?mir Sorunu, K?br?s Sorunu, Da?l?k Karaba? Sorunu) kal?c? çözüm getirememesi de, Nobel Bar?? Ödülü sahibi olmas?na kar??n, d?? politikada ba?ar?s?n?n sorgulanmas?na yol açm??t?r.

Obama ailesi
Amerikal?lar?n sisteme entegrasyonunu tam olarak gerçekle?tirememesidir. Bu konuda, Obama, Afrikal? Amerikal? kimli?i nedeniyle çok avantajl? durumda olmas?na kar??n, sistemi kökünden de?i?tirebilecek bir güce hiçbir zaman eri?ememi?tir. Bugün bile, ABDde polis ?iddeti nedeniyle onlarca Afrikal?

Walk the M as per the paper note. I had to do it a few times to get it right.
I clicked so that Obama took small steps up the M, down to the middle then up for the next hump all the way down tot he end of the M.

Take the hamburger.
Go out, out gaain.
Go right.
Go up.

Talk to the big guy.
Ask how much he weighs.
Give him the hamburger.
Go fetch another hamgurger and give it to the big guy.
Talk to the big guy and ask him to stand in the corner.
He is now heavy enough and will open the door.
Go right.

Talk to professor Fink.
Talk about his cat
Go out, out,
Go right.

Take the STOP sign.
Go out. Go South.
Quickly place the STOP sign in front of you to halt Minotauro.

Take the stop sign and place it on the right side at the door.
Go right.

Take Prof Finks cat.
Take the piece of paper.
Go left.
Take the STOP sign and place it at the left door.
Go left.
Go North.
Go right.

Give the cat to Prof Fink.
You will get the see-through-wood-glasses.
Go out, out, Right.

Use the glasses to "read" the wood. (Your numbers could be different)
My numbers at the top: 724613985
Order: 7359
My code will be: 9415 (the 7th number, then the 3rd, 5th, 9th)
Open the door by entering 9415 on the keypad.
Go right.

Take the paper.
Look at the paper:

I have 5473
Look at the color paper you pick up earlier:

The order will be the number color as per the other paper.
Color 5 = yellow, 4 = pink, 7 = light green, etc.
Now walk to the correct color block in sequence, without touching the other colors.
If you step correctly you will see your number on the wall.
For me it is: Yellow, Pink,Light green, Red
If correct, the door will open.
Go right.

Take the paper and read it:

12-39-17
Look through the hole next to the door.
Now create a path for the robot so that he will have to walk over the 3 numbers on the paper. Order does not matter.
Here is my solution:

Once you have a path, talk to the robot and tell him to walk.
If he stepped on the 3 numbers and reach the END, then the door will open.
Go right.

Go right.

You have 60 seconds to survive this room.
Take the paper and read.

Yellow, 5, 4, blue
To get this:
Step on Rotate until the 5 is on the left.
Step on Yellow to clear then step on the 5.
Now step on rotate and the left column, rotate, then left column, until the 4 is in the middle right.
Now only step right onto the 4. Then blue.
Problem solved!
The door will open and you can escape!
Well done on solving Obama Saw 2.
Hope you enjoyed my walkthrough.
